Rashes and Eczema

An itchy rash, including eczema, can be reviewed in this primary-care skin program from age 12. Younger children are seen in the kids program. Biopsy, light treatment, and immune-system medicines are not offered here. No named provider has signed this draft.

Symptoms and questions to discuss

  • Itch with dry, red, cracked, or thickened patches
  • A rash that oozes clear fluid or crusts after scratching
  • Flares after soap, fragrance, sweat, heat, or rough fabric
  • A warm area that spreads, or pus on top of a rash
  • Fever, peeling, mouth or eye sores, or swelling of the face or throat

What we check

  • Where the rash sits, including face, hands, and folds
  • Itch, sleep lost to itch, and earlier flares
  • Soaps, fragrances, fabrics, new products, and recent medicines
  • Hay fever, asthma, or family eczema as background only
  • Broken, warm, weeping, or blistered skin

Treatment options by class

Your provider reviews appropriate options and follow-up based on your assessment.

  • A short lukewarm wash and a bland cream or ointment used while the skin is still damp
  • A corticosteroid cream or ointment class, only as the provider directs
  • Fewer triggers, including fragrance, harsh soap, wool, and overheating
  • Handoff when the rash is widespread, unclear, infected, or not improving

When we refer

This is primary care in the skin program, not a dermatology or allergy department. A severe, widespread, or persistent rash is referred out. That handoff is not an accepted appointment. Fever with peeling or blisters, mouth, eye, or genital sores, and trouble breathing go to emergency care. No named provider has signed this draft.

What the rash visit looks for

The provider asks about itch, lost sleep, past flares, hay fever or asthma, soaps, fragrance, and new medicines. Eczema is an itchy pattern that flares and quiets. It is not the name for every red patch, and more than one visit may be needed. Blood tests or a skin biopsy used to look for another cause are outside this clinic. A symptom list does not diagnose you.

First care, and what is not started here

Wash once daily in lukewarm water with a mild unscented cleanser, pat dry, and moisturize while damp. Prefer creams or ointments. Skip wool and overheating. A corticosteroid cream or ointment class may be used on the rash. Steroid pills are not the usual first plan, because the rash can rebound when they stop. Light treatment and immune-system medicines are for severe disease and are not started here. No bleach-bath recipe is given.

Follow-up and who reviews a result

Return if itch or rash is not easing, and sooner if it spreads, weeps, or follows a new medicine. The ordering provider reviews any test from this visit. Allergy testing and biopsy are done outside. A planned referral is not an accepted appointment, and no turnaround is stated. Do not start leftover pills if scratching has broken the skin.

Patterns that skip a routine visit

Spreading redness, warmth, and fever should not wait for a routine booking. Call 911 for trouble breathing or swallowing, a hoarse voice, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Fever with peeling, blisters, or sores on the mouth, eyes, or genitals is treated in hospital. Tell emergency clinicians every medicine you take. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own unless they direct it.

Frequently asked questions

Is eczema contagious?

No. Eczema cannot be caught from another person. Scratching can still let bacteria into broken skin, so a warm, spreading area needs a prompt look.

Can this visit biopsy a rash?

No. A skin biopsy, when needed to sort out another cause, is coordinated outside. This clinic does not read that tissue. The ordering provider reviews the report that comes back.

Will the cream clear eczema for good?

No. Care aims to quiet flares and repair the skin barrier. Quiet periods can follow flares. This page does not promise that the rash will stay gone.

When should a rash skip the clinic?

Call 911 for face, lip, tongue, or throat swelling, or for trouble breathing. Go to the emergency room for fever with blisters, peeling, or sores on the mouth, eyes, or genitals, and for redness that spreads with fever.

Do you see children younger than 12 for eczema?

This skin page starts at age 12. Younger children are seen in the kids program. This visit does not create a pediatric dermatology service.
